A Quantitative Investigation of Wind Power Density Spectrum Using Reanalysis Data

R. Reshma Gopi, A. Chitra

Abstract

In this work, two-parameter Weibull distribution has been used to estimate the wind energy potential at Kayathar, India, after analysing the wind data collected over a one-year period (2019) at 10 m above the ground. The two parameters are calculated by applying the empirical methods developed by Justus and Lysen, as well as graphical, maximum likelihood, energy pattern factor, and moment methods. Moreover, the corresponding statistical errors are calculated to determine which of the above methods is the most appropriate for an estimation of the Weibull parameters. Estimation of Weibull probability density and cumulative distribution functions have been performed. The error in the wind power density, determined by applying the mean wind speed cubed and the Weibull methods, is also analysed. The novelty of this work is the recognition of the variability of the transmuted parameter on the estimation of wind power density. This study will allow researchers and power engineers to devise a more reliable and sustainable energy plan for Kayathar, India.
